MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, 4 April 2017 – The HR industry is at risk of extinction if it fails to rapidly reinvent itself according to new global research conducted by PageUp, a leading multinational Talent Management Software-as-a-Service (Saas) provider. PageUp launched the findings of its new book: Cliffhanger: HR on the Precipice in the Future of Work, in Australia last month, putting HR on notice and warning the digital revolution is not backing down.
The book, co-authored by Sylvia Vorhauser-Smith, Senior Vice President of Global Research, PageUp and Karen Cariss, CEO and Co-founder of PageUp, offers an insightful blend of current research, thinking and futurist forecasts from multiple global HR industry thought-leaders as well as the findings of three PageUp Talent Labs conducted over a 12-month period. The authors, together with various HR contributors to the book, explore where HR stands in the future of work, and share first-hand insights on how HR needs to rethink, reframe and reorganise its contribution to benefit from the changing realities of the new digital frontier.
“Through the PageUp Talent Labs we’ve collated an enormous amount of insight from industry thought-leaders and customers into the future of work which feeds directly into our product development. We wrote the Cliffhanger book so that HR leaders can be the business leaders they need to be to survive in the current environment,” said Karen Cariss at the launch.
Underpinning the Cliffhanger book is the notion that workplaces are being redefined and reimagined, underscored by a new understanding of productivity and engagement which will see a multi-modal future workforce. The book showcases how HR’s own journey of reinvention has extended over the last few decades, with a lack of urgency, diluted focus and direction, and measures of success that remain ill-defined.
“The road ahead requires HR to play a strategic role in the organisation by sharp alignment with the business strategy, using technology as an enabler and applying strategic foresight to navigate future workforce needs,” Cariss added.
“The journey that HR is travelling has hit a hard stop and is under pressure to not only facilitate the transition of the workforce into the new world of work, but equally to reinvent itself,” said Sylvia Vorhauser-Smith. “HR is on the precipice of a cliff. There is a real risk of falling over and there are two choices to make: invent a way across the chasm, or disappear into it.”
As part of the launch, PageUp led a panel discussion comprising of HR leaders across various industries to discuss the future of work in Australia and its implications on businesses. The panel in Sydney included Cait Hayes, Director, People & Culture at Foxtel and Zrinka Lovrencic, Managing Director at Great Place to Work Institute Australia. In Melbourne, the panel included Chris Steinfort, Organisational Change & HR Consultant (former HR Director, Australia Red Cross) and Paul Birch, Director of People and Culture at Transdev.
“We need to be far more creative and innovative when it comes to the definition of work and employment relationships. “We’re seeing a very competitive landscape in HR and we need to ensure that we are prepared and agile when looking at different work designs and clusters of communities. The skills required by HR are a combination of people and business skills.
