For the last five years, Gerry Crispin and Mark Mehler of CareersXroads, USA have researched and reported on the quality of staffing strategy and process of America's Fortune 500 organisations. For the last four years, they have had 20 HR professionals "mystery shop" for jobs on-line with these organisations and then report on their experiences. The following charts and overviews are a very brief snapshot of some of the results in the White Paper which is available to download at http://www.careerxroads.com/news/2006FortuneStudyWhitepaper.pdf.
Essential in these skill-short days is the ability for candidates to easily research career opportunities at your organisation. Only 56.4% of Fortune 500 websites were judged to have a prominent link from the home page to the career site. 21 out of the Fortune 500 had no career website. How does your company compare?
The CareersXroads report has measured the number of clicks from home page to a real job description for the last five years. 2006 was the "worst showing in the last three years as it took an average of 4.25 clicks to find a job description"
That is, can a candidate get an overview of "what's in it for them" in looking to join the organisation?
A whopping 68.8% or 344 out of the Fortune 500 had no Employer Brand statement on their website and only 36 had a brand statement that was reiterated or reinforced throughout the rest of the website (such as interviews with current staff or demonstrations of how values are played out in the workplace).
Of the organisations that did have an Employer Brand statement, most were very "clichd". The most common statement found in this year's research was "Join our Team" with at least 10% of the Fortune 500 offering this tag line as their call to action! How original is your call to action?
Crispin & Mehler conclude their report with a few questions to ask yourself as a recruiting organisation:
