At PageUp People we view the four key areas of talent management as elements which, when strategically integrated, combine to form a powerful business approach - exponentially greater than the sum of its parts. A recent PageUp People White Paper discusses Integrated Talent Management as being a critical "business challenge facing organisations this century". We firmly believe that by understanding each element and how they all fit together, professionals across any area of talent management will be better equipped to deal proactively with the changing face of human capital and ultimately, its impact on business sustainability.
This year's newsletters will each address a key area of talent management, providing thought-provoking discussion and an opportunity to stay in the loop with PageUp People and the latest development in the industry.
This issue focuses on Training and Development and covers the following:
1. e-Learning versus Face-to-Face Learning: the Great Debate
4. PageUp People Podcast Series
"Ah, you learn something every day". From learning about new technologies, to advances in our field of choice, to scoping out the end of year sales, learning is part of our essence as humans. Today Learning and Development professionals are equipped with many creative tools in which to train and develop employees. The great debate around e-Learning versus face-to-face training centres on results. Which method reaps the best results for employee and company growth?
The theory of multiple intelligences suggests that we learn and solve problems in different ways. For example, those with "bodily-kinaesthetic" intelligence learn best by physically doing something, strong "interpersonal" intelligence can mean the person learns best by interacting with others and those with "verbal-linguistic intelligence" enjoy learning through listening (e.g. to a lecture) and reading. Principles of adult learning suggest that adults are motivated to learn when they have the opportunity to share and build on their existing experience.
e-Learning means that the trainer and participants use technology to interact (e.g. an online tutorial available on the web). This presents a challenge for the trainer using e-Learning techniques as it is can be difficult to recognise and cater for the different "intelligences" and past experiences of the participants. The latest thinking on e-Learning (referred to as e-Learning 2.0) attempts to address these challenges and highlights the benefits of using social software such as discussion boards, blogs and virtual worlds (e.g. Second Life) to improve the effectiveness of e-Learning.
Which method reaps the best results? This is not an easy question to answer. Let's consider some of the pros and cons:
With each method having clear advantages and disadvantages, it's interesting to note that a recent CIPD survey found few (7%) learning and development managers in the UK included e-learning in the top 3 most effective training practices . However, the use of e-learning is on the rise, with 29% of respondents saying that 25-50% of all training will be delivered remotely in the next 3 years.
Speaking to Susannah Aumann, PageUp People trainer, it is clear that she is keen to further explore the benefits of e-Learning, "I enjoy delivering face-to-face training and I believe interaction with participants brings many benefits. However, the steps I have taken towards introducing e-Learning at PageUp People have proven to be successful and I am very excited about the benefits of online learning. I am working on increasing the level of interaction and reducing the "distance" between myself and participants when delivering a session online".
