Blogs!!! The hottest trend to get your employment brand out there

What are Blogs? Who uses them? Why are they the hottest internet trend right now in recruitment?

Blogs is short for Weblogs. A Weblog is an online journal (or newsletter) which is frequently updated, and intended to be read by the general public. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or website (http://web.archive.org/web/20060819110539/http://www.bytowninternet.com/glossary).

Anyone can set up a Blog. Marketing managers can use them to keep staff aware of marketing activity, recruiters (to report on their daily activities), and new graduates (commenting on their new work life) can all have their own Blog

According to Blog monitor technoratti, approximately 30,000 Blogs are being created every 24 hours. Blogs are an important tool to get your employment brand out in the public. They offer an excellent opportunity to communicate with candidates and give them an idea of your organisation?s culture.

A Blog can be featured on your careers website, providing an insight into an employee's day to day activities and responsibilities.

Blogs don't necessarily have to be focussed on the daily activities which occur within your organisation. A blog could involve discussions on current issues within recruitment and your industry sector, workforce shortages, or hints and tips on how to succeed at interview. A Blog is an easy way to put a face to your organisation, and it enables the writer to convey an idea of their organisation?s culture and personality.

To see a great recruitment Blog, have a look at Hireblog.blogspot.com Blog. This Blog is specifically dedicated to spreading the word about new recruiting technologies. This Blog recently, featured an interesting article outlining the benefits and features of Google base beta http://web.archive.org/web/20060819110539/http://base.google.com/

Another great internet and recruiting blog is Cheesman's Online Recruitment Blog, (http://web.archive.org/web/20060819110539/http://cheesmans.typepad.com/seo/), voted Best Technology Recruitment Blog by The Recruiting.Com. Joel Cheesman uses his blog to communicate his thoughts on Internet Recruiting and search engine optimisation. He has written a number of books on online recruitment strategies, including ?Battling Free?, illustrating how an organisation can post jobs online free of charge, and 'You Don't Need Monster, When You've Got Google' which suggests recruitment strategies using search engine optimisation.

One of the most influential recruitment Blogs is the Microsoft Blog.. It is featured on the Microsoft careers website (http://web.archive.org/web/20060819110539/http://blogs.msdn.com/jobsblog/), and allows its employees to communicate their thoughts, ideas and jobs into their own personal Blog. The Microsoft Blog is different in that it recognizes women for their efforts in the IT industry, and is presented as a young, fresh, and funky website, offering valuable insights into what it is like to work at Microsoft. The Marketing Manager regularly writes features and publishes hints and tips for applicants wanting to work at Microsoft. It has a link to search for jobs through Jobster, and is an excellent benchmark for organisations looking to set up their own Blog.

Another interesting example of a corporate blog is Cadbury Scheweppes (http://web.archive.org/web/20060819110539/http://www.cadburyschweppes.com/). This particular blog is dedicated to new graduates, and it aims to capture the attention of the grad market by listing several sources of interesting information, including the day to day activities of a new graduate. The blog gives employees an opportunity to talk about their roles at Cadbury Scheweppes, giving a very personal insight into the company. The overall aim of the Cadbury Schweppes Blog is to help potential applicants to make an informed decision about whether Cadbury Schweppes is the right company for them.

Recruiting blogs are in the early stages of adoption, however it is likely that in future they will become the norm for Top 500 Organisations. Blogs offer extensive branding and repositioning opportunity, and can be used to develop a talent pool from the string of followers who read the Blog. We can look forward to seeing Recruiting Blogs become an important and influential tool in the constantly evolving recruitment landscape.?
