HOW DOES PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT PERFORM?

HOW DOES PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT PERFORM?

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - July 24, 2008 - Integrated Talent Management solutions provider, PageUp People has today released the results of an online Performance Management survey conducted during the months of May and June 2008.

The study, in which 154 Australian HR professionals participated, is part of PageUp People's commitment to continually research trends in the talent management market.

The results indicate that the majority of formal performance management reviews were conducted annually (48%), with an overwhelming majority of participants commenting that a rating system is used (75%) and employees' performance results were adjusted to follow a bell curve of distribution (55%).

Furthermore, 52% of participants commented that there is somewhat of a correlation between an employees' rank on a rating system and their remuneration.

Despite key trends in other areas, the survey indicates that there is a variation on what Australian companies currently base formal performance objectives upon. The findings indicate that key performance indicators (27%), behaviours required for the role (21%), training and development needs (20%) and skills required for the position (17%) were all involved in the setting of employees' performance objectives.

Of interest was the majority finding that only some HR systems were integrated with the performance management process (49%). Specifically, training and development (37%), reward/recognition (28%) and succession (22%) systems were found to be integrated with performance management.

Karen Cariss, PageUp People CEO, commented that the finding relating to the integration of HR systems was a positive indicator that the Australian market was moving toward a fully integrated talent management approach.

'Although only 6% of respondents noted that all HR systems were integrated, the finding that a significant number of respondents reported some integration with HR systems is encouraging. Moving toward an integrated talent management approach, where information relating to retention, recruitment, performance management and training and development is shared, is the way of the future and really acts to lift the strategic impact of the HR functions.'
